Happy Halloween!

Do you like my ballerenia costume? Denali thinks its pretty cool, that why she's licking my toes in the picture! I wore my costume to day care today and got lots of attention for it. Very cool. Then daddy picked me up and took me to the ER to say hi to all his friends there, but I was pretty tired by then so I didn't feel like socializing. I was much happier to come home, eat some squash, drink some milk, and play with my sisters. After my beloved bath time, daddy and I sat down to read. He put some books out as options, and I distinctly reached for "Goodnight Moon". I smiled and giggled at the great green room in the pictures. I even helped daddy turn the pages. I know I am going to like this reading thing. That's good, because mommy has hundreds of books to read around the house. I better get started soon!

Whirled Peas

I have officially started Stage 1 foods. It's a good thing.

After 2 weeks of rice cereal I was definitely ready for somethming a bit more . . . uh . . . substantial. I actually squealed with glee when mommy pulled the gerber jars out of her shopping bag (no joke!). First up on the menu was peas. They are green and mushy and just wonderful! Daddy fed me spoonfuls while I sat in my new high chair. I launched myself at the spoon, devouring a dozen bites. It went really well!

I have to eat just peas for a few days, and then I get to try other foods. Next on the list are yams, squash, and carrots. I can't wait!

My Silly Sister

Sister Denali is a wonderful friend. She is always gentle with me and lets me touch her face and pet her velvety ears. She sniffs me when I am fussy and makes me smile.

But she's not very bright.

Sometimes Skye gets to Denali's bed first, and scares Nali away from using it. So Denali just curls up in Skye's bed. Or at least tries to! Sometimes, she tries to squeeze into Skye's bed even when her bed is wide open!

We don't know why she does it, but it's really funny.

Michigan Ave and Me

We just got back from Chicago and I am really tired. There was so much to do! We drove there on Friday night and mommy and I slept in back seat the whole way. Thank you daddy for driving through the loney dark of Western Illinois! He listened to his medical journals, so I really can't imagine how he stayed awake!

When arrived at the Hilton Suites in Chicago, Grandad, Boppy, Uncle Kurt, and Uncle Steve were all waiting for us in the lobby. After having such a long nap in the car, I was ready to smile, charm, and play with the family. But it was midnight, and mommy made us go to bed. We brought my "pack and play" crib, but it not verfy confortable to sleep in. So after a couple of tries, mommy and daddy let me climb in the comfy hotel bed and we all fell asleep together.

We met the rest of the family in the hotel coffee shop for traditional game day pancakes. There were lots of people wearing cardinal in the lobby, becuase the buses for the USC fans going to South Bend were parked outside. Daddy and Grandad and Uncles Kurt and Steve drove their own car to the game. USC beat Notre Dame 38 - 0! It was the first time that Grandad had seen his team win in person in South Bend, so he was really exicted. Daddy says that he'll take me to the game in a couple of years. I hope so- I've heard the Notre Dame campus is beautiful!

While the boys went to the game, mommy and Boppy and I had a "girls day out" on Michigan Avenue! I could really get used to this shopping thing! Boppy played with me while mommy got her hair cut and colored. She looks beautiful afterwards! And she kept her long hair so I can grab clumps as she nuzzles me (I love that!). They showed me stores like Bloomingdales, the Gap, and Water Tower place, but I favorite by far was Sephora. The colors and sounds and smells were absolutely amazing! I remember it from my first visit to Chicago, back in June (see right).

In the evening, we joined mommy's resident Soon-Min and her daughter Julia for dinner at the very chaotic and busy Cheesecake Factory. But everyone was very nice to us and Julia was fun to play with. I hope I can see her again sometime.

After such a long day (I was having so much fun I barely napped!) I crashed big time when we got back to the hotel. I didn't even notice daddy struggle in from the road at 9pm, returning victorious from Notre Dame.
In the morning, we went out for Dim Sum, another first for me. It looked good, but I had to settle for milk again. Someday I be able to taste all this great stuff that my parents eat right in front of me! After brunch, it was back home to Iowa. I finally got tired of all that driving and voiced my displeasure for most of the last 30 miles. But waiting for me at home was a wonderful surprise: Gran! She was here to host a party for her Safari company at our home. COOL!

Boppy, Mommy, Grandad: if you have any pictures from Chicago, send them to daddy so he can help me post them to the blog!

My Boppy is Back!

Grandad and Boppy came to Iowa to see me this week! They arrived on Tuesday night and played with me all of Wednesday and Thursday, then left Friday am. We had a great time- lots of walks to look at the changing leaves, playing with my sisters, and trying out a new toy: a bouncy jumper chair. It's a seat that is suspended from a frame by four bungee cords. It's pretty cool- it wobbles and shakes and plays really funny music. It gives me the perfect place to sit and watch my sister's antics.

Boppy is a lot of fun to have around. She makes funny sounds that make me laugh and she plays the Wicked soundtrack while we dance and sing. One of Boppy's favorite muscials is the Sound of Music, which happens to be one of daddy's favorites as well. He downloaded a few songs from the movie into his iphone and we danced and sang to them as well.

On Thursday night, we went to Takanami with Bruce and Mary Ganz again. I am becoming quite the regular at that place! This time, when I got restless, Boppy took me to watch the fish in their giant tank. I was totally mesmerized!

On Friday, we went to Chicago . . . and met up with Boppy and Grandad again! YAY! And Uncle Steve and Uncle Kurt were there too! But that's a story for the next entry.

Haute Cuisine!

I tasted my first solid food this week! Mommy and Gran offered me a thin rice cereal on Wednesday and I actually ate a couple of bites. It was very exciting! And tonight daddy fed me about a dozen bites. It went really well, but I still prefer breast milk.

I had grown increasing frustrated watching mommy and daddy eat their dinners right in front of me. Can you imagine the nerve of these people? What a tease! I watched them eat bite after bite and followed the food from the plate to their mouths. It got so frustrating I reached out for their food just to clue them in that I want some too! Although I will be happy to enjoy breast milk for a while more, my parents have assured me that new things are coming in a few weeks: peas, yams, and even applesauce. COOL!

Also: Due to popular request from Aunt Ada's students, I have agreed to add another team to my favorites list.

My First Plane Ride to My Biggest Fan

My First Plane Ride to See My Biggest Fan

On Thursday evening, mommy and daddy and I drove to the Cedar Rapids airport to board our flight to State College, where Ada and the rest of the family has been patiently waiting. We had prepared carefully for the difficult check-in process, packed the maximum number of carry-on bags to keep me happy and fed, and steeled ourselves for the painful clearance of security. And then everything went fine, with no problems and we were at the gate in less than 15 minutes. All too easy.

Then the other shoe dropped. They found a flat tire on our plane and had to cancel the flight while they waited for a replacement tire from Minneapolis. Certain to miss our connection, we were re-booked for the next day to go through St Louis into Harrisburg. Not exactly close to State College, but it was the best we could do. Daddy missed his conference where he was supposed to give a talk, but he was much happier staying with me and mommy. We flew out of Cedar Rapids the next morning, and I fell asleep on the plane- no problem. Mommy gave me a bottle to suck on as the pressure in my ears changed and I hardly noticed.

When we got to St Louis, however, we faced a problem. Our connecting flight was in a different terminal than our plane from Iowa and we had to clear security again. Unlike the smooth and courteous operation in Cedar Rapids, however, the anxious and harried guards in St Louis were struggling to keep up with the massive numbers of travelers. Worse yet, our unusual travel plans got us flagged for additional screening, including the guard patting me down for hidden weapons and bombs! Mommy was very mad that the guard had to touch me and almost caused a national incident. I am very proud of her defending me like that. I always feel safe when she is nearby.

We flew again, this time to Cincinnati. And again, I had no problem with the flight. We thought we had a direct flight to Harrisburg, but we were wrong. Another ride, another airport. But Cincinnati was not like St Louis. They were all very nice there and they got us back on our plane really quick. Finally, we got to Harrisburg, 10 hours after we left home. And Aunt Ada was there to meet us! Ada was so excited to finally meet me in person- someone that she had been connecting with via words and pictures for so many months. Mommy and daddy and I were all so exhausted from our long journey that we slept in the car all the way back to State College, where the rest of the family was waiting at the Spring Creek Inn.

Ada and Unca Mike’s Bed and Breakfast is a wonderful place- a large 3 story house set alongside a rushing creek and full of history and fascinating antiques. They brought me into the “Jade Room” and I was immediately fascinated with all the mysterious Asian artifacts and objects of art. We got dressed into our Halloween costumes for dinner with the family. Mommy and daddy were funny looking in their monk robes and I got to be Angelina Ballerina! Ada was especially tickled by my costume because Angelina is her favorite children’s book. I looked so cute with my tutu and mouse ears and even a little tail!

After such a weird day full of traveling, it was pretty understandable that I didn’t sleep well. That’s OK, because we had very little to do the next morning- only have brunch with the family and watch football! We went to cousin Harper and Laura’s house for brunch. It was the first time I got to meet my cousins. I was especially looking forward to meeting Harper because she was only born 4 days before me. Cool! Harper and I played on her play mat (it is almost as cool as mine, but not quite!) while the bigger cousin Laura danced and sang all around us. I was afraid she might fall onto Harper and I, but mommy was right there, always watching out for me. I didn’t seem to notice Harper much- apparently my growing brain doesn’t recognize other babies yet- but I sure noticed Harper’s doggie-brother Champ! Champ is a really cute corgi and I thought she was very funny running around after her ball. I watched her with glee the whole time. Puppies are awesome!
We went for a walk around the Penn State campus. It was very soothing to be pushed in a stroller where I could stare up at all the wonderful trees and I soon fell sound asleep. I awoke in an ice-cream parlor; the most wonderful-smelling building I had ever encountered. It was the famous Penn State creamery, where students like Ben and Jerry got their start as ice-cream majors in college! The whole room smelled like milk- cow’s milk of course, which is not as delicious as mommy’s milk, but it did smell pretty good!

Finally, we headed back to Spring Creek so that mommy could make her famous Pumpkin Mushroom Soup. Someday I will be old enough to cook and she can teach me the recipe. It smelled wonderful and always makes daddy swoon with pleasure. I had no problem falling asleep this time, and curled up with mommy as daddy watched his Trojans play mommy’s Stanford Cardinal. Daddy woke mommy up to congratulate her on Stanford’s unbelievable upset and her first words were, “We won? Oh, I’m sorry”, and then went back to sleep. How cute! I have a great mommy.

Meeting Barack Obama

Tonight I finally got to hear the man that daddy has been cheering about for the last 6 months. Barack Obama came back to Iowa City, this time to the Coraville Conference Center, and spoke for about an hour about foreign policy. There I was, cuddled into daddy's arms in the back of the room, hypnotized by the bright lights and thousands of people. I sat and listened, occasionally slurping on my bottle of mommy's milk. Daddy was very impressed with how calm I was. He shouldn't have been surprised- I kept hearing from Daddy and Ada and Gran how great Obama is, but I wanted to listen intently and see if there is any substance to the hype and the charisma. Mommy taught me well to be skeptical and to keep a lookout for the wolf in sheep's clothing. But he seemed sincere to me. And everyone in the room loved him.

The day started out not so good. I awoke early in the AM with a fever, so daddy cancelled his work meetings and stayed home with me. We played, went for a drive, sucked down breast milk and tylenol, and made the best of it. The coolest thing was definitely playing in the bedroom and listening to the rain. Around mid-afternoon, daddy set up my blanket and aquarium toy (an electronic fake fish tank that plays classical music and has pretty lights) on the bed and Skye joined us in her usual corner perch, so she could continue her guard duties. Ihad been feeling miserable all day, but the music and lights from the toy made me laugh. And it was so cozy to watch the rain and nuzzle up against Skye. Mommy came home after a long day of surgery and was too tired to go back out.

The rain got steadily worse, until just after we arrived at the Obama rally they issued a tornado warning! It turns out that the ballroom was a safe tornado shelter, so we were OK. Obama said, "Most of you people just ducked in here to take shelter from the tornado, but found out there were some speeches going on!". Before Obama started, we walked around the ballroom and met our state representative, Dick Myers. He was a funny and personable old man, but he called me "husky"! I guess I can't get away from the fact that I have the body the size of a baby twice my age. I am a true "corn fed" Iowan!

Obama's warm-up act was speech writer Ted Sorenson*, who famously wrote for John F Kennedy. Mr Sorenson said that many qualities about Obama remind him of JFK and many of the circumstances of the election mirror 1959. Mr Sorenson believes that JFK's good judgement got us through the Cuban Missle Crisis safely, by being willing to ignore his general's recommendation for millitary action and by being willing to negotiate with your enemy: "We should never negotiate out of fear, but we should never be afraid to negotiate." Obama created quite a stir when he said he would talk to America's enemies such as Kim Jong Il and Jugo Chavez. But to his credit, he never backed down from that stance, and is serious about being willing to use diplomacy. Obama touts his early opposition to the war as evidence of his good judgment. I can see why daddy likes this guy!
